Problem:

York University’s current enrollment system is fragmented across multiple disjointed platforms, creating confusion and frustration for students due to unclear navigation and a lack of straightforward steps to enroll in courses.

Solution:

We redesigned York’s enrollment system into a single, unified platform that guides students through each step of the process. The new interface features an improved visual design aligning with York’s brand guidelines, along with time-saving elements. Together, these improvements eliminate confusion and significantly speed up course enrollment.

01. Research

We conducted research through a Google Form survey of 20 students across various programs and year levels, supplemented by two one-on-one interviews and firsthand participation in the enrollment process. While this approach provided valuable insights, the data skews toward second-year design students as they were our classmates, which made it easier to reach out.

03. User Testing

We conducted in-person usability testing with five students, observing them as they navigated through our prototype.

Home page

The homepage combines all the necessary tools onto one page, allowing users to access any of them directly. It also briefly explains what each tool does.

Course Browsing

Upon entering the page, users will see the mandatory courses required for the year, along with suggested electives.

  • Menu: Added courses appear in the side menu. Users can view course details, including a brief summary, the schedule, and a rating out of five stars.

Visual Calendars Builder

Once users finish selecting their courses, they can begin building their schedule. The builder auto-saves progress and shows different possible configurations with the selected courses. Below the schedule, users can track their course progression to ensure they are meeting graduation requirements.

Registration and Enrolment Module

REM reflects any changes made in the visual schedule builder and serves as the final step to confirm enrollment. It also allows users to modify course details or drop courses if needed.

Takeaways

  • Research Over Assumptions: Gained hands-on experience conducting primary research and analyzing user data through surveys and interviews, which helped uncover pain points and inform targeted design solutions.

  • Usability Testing: Discovered the importance of usability testing, as it revealed valuable user insights that my partner and I might not have noticed on our own.

  • Teamwork: Learned the value of staying accountable, dividing tasks efficiently, and combining our ideas to create a stronger final product than either of us could have made alone.
