Interactive Story: Squid Game

Overview

An interactive Squid Game-themed storytelling website designed in Figma. As first-time users, we created an immersive first-person experience, plunging players into the show’s deadly challenges and themes of inequality. Through branching narratives, interactive choices, and animations, we captured the tension and moral dilemmas of the original series

My Contributions

  • Researched Squid Game themes and aesthetics – Analyzed the show’s episodes, interviews, artworks, and supplemental media to extract key visual and narrative motifs. Translated findings into immersive storytelling elements for the website.

  • Illustrated critical set pieces – Used Adobe Illustrator to design high-fidelity assets replicating the show’s iconic environments, ensuring visual consistency across the prototype.

  • Led narrative and interaction design for Game 1 (Red Light, Green Light) – Storyboarded, designed, and prototyped the core gameplay sequence, including the intro sequence and in-between games.

01. Research

For our research on the show, we re-watched episodes, reviewed interviews, analyzed show breakdowns, and explored related content such as fan art and games. During this process, one particular quote stood out to us, capturing the essence of the twisted games. Inspired by this, we decided to build the story and visuals around the quote.

" Do you know what people who have no money have in common with people who have too much money?
Living is no fun."

02. Design System

We followed the official brand guidelines for this York University redesign project, incorporating the university's colour palette, typography, and design principles to ensure a cohesive update that aligns with its identity.

03. Final Design

Takeaways

  • Leadership – Championed the Squid Game project vision by keeping the team on track through weekly goals, structured meetings, and clear communication. Presented our work confidently to professors and defended design decisions to ensure our creative direction stayed intact.

  • Storytelling Through Design – Learned to craft immersive narratives by balancing striking visuals with purposeful interactions, using techniques like timed animations and minimal dialogue to heighten tension and emotional impact.

  • Collaboration – Recognized how to merge team strengths into a cohesive vision, adapting to technical constraints while preserving the project’s core themes and user experience.
